(Welders, Boilermakers, Pipefitters, Shipbuilders, Inspectors, Construction Safety Officers, Con-Space Rescue Techs, Site Medics)
Description
Workers who are required to enter into, or work in proximity to, confined space should possess a thorough understanding of the hazards and risks inherent to these spaces. This safety training course begins by identifying the regulatory organizations that influence confined space safety and how these spaces are classified according to hazard ratings. The responsibilities to maintain safety in each type of space will be explained in detail, enabling workers to approach their tasks with an attitude of using safe work habits.
By reviewing case studies, students will examine and discuss historical incidents that have occurred in confined spaces in BC and how they might have been prevented. Hazard mitigation concepts such as atmospheric testing & monitoring, effective ventilation, and lock-out procedures will be covered using a combination of classroom work and practical hands-on skills.
In addition to ensuring that safety concepts are practiced through practical skill application, students will also be presented with how to read, understand, and use proper documentation such as Hazard/Risk assessments, Work & Entry Permits, and Rescue Pre-Plans. All of which are necessary when entering into confined spaces.
Also covered in this course:
- Care, use, and interpretation of atmospheric monitors.
- Selection of Personal Protective Equipment.
- Understanding how to meet compliance with applicable regulations.
- Permit requirements, Hazard Assessments, Lock Out procedures.

- Class Duration: 4 Hours
Who should take this class:
Workers involved with construction, heavy industry, emergency response, or safety co-ordinators may be assigned to monitor workers entering into confined spaces.
(Welders, Boilermakers, Pipefitters, Shipbuilders, Inspectors, Construction Safety Officers, Con-Space Rescue Techs, Site Medics)
Description
When workers enter into Confined Spaces for any purpose, Worksafe Regulations require a standby person to monitor the well-being of the entrants. In addition, the responsibilities of the Standby Person for each hazard rating will be examined so that students will understand their duties as a safety monitor.
As every Confined Space presents unique hazards, students will study how chemical gases behave in different atmospheric conditions and how best to mitigate risks through using gas detectors, ventilation, and lock-out verification.
Also covered in this course:
- Understanding entry permits
- Understanding lockout procedures
- Understanding rescue pre-plans
- Overview of operating gas detectors.
- Bump testing
- Proper use
